During normal operations, the John Day Nav. Lock Gate was damaged to the point of being inoperable. Knight Construction was selected to perform the repair, repaint, and reinstallation of the 212,000 LB, 28’ tall x 87’ wide Nav. Gate, due to our experience with moving large stoplogs and gates, and our ability to perform the work on time and under budget.
In order to meet the specifications of the project, KCC moved the gate by barge to Thompson Metal Fab (Vancouver, WA) for repair and painting. Simultaneously, a second KCC crew repaired the gate guides and machinery at the John Day Project. This enabled KCC to save time by having the lock prepared and ready, for the reconstructed gate which was barged up the river and reinstalled
